He also defeated the Moabites, and after making them lie down on the ground, he measured them off with a cord. He measured every two cord lengths of those to be put to death and one full length of those to be kept alive. So the Moabites became David\u2019s subjects and brought tribute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>David also defeated Hadadezer son of Rehob, king of Zobah, when he went to restore his control at the Euphrates River. David captured seventeen hundred horsemen and twenty thousand foot soldiers from him, and he hamstrung all the horses and kept a hundred chariots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the Arameans of Damascus came to assist King Hadadezer of Zobah, David struck down twenty-two thousand Aramean men. Then he placed garrisons in Aram of Damascus, and the Arameans became David\u2019s subjects and brought tribute. The Lord made David victorious wherever he went.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>David took the gold shields of Hadadezer\u2019s officers and brought them to Jerusalem. King David also took huge quantities of bronze from Betah and Berothai, Hadadezer\u2019s cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When King Toi of Hamath heard that David had defeated the entire army of Hadadezer, he sent his son Joram to King David to greet him and to congratulate him because David had fought against Hadadezer and defeated him, for Toi and Hadadezer had fought many wars. Joram had items of silver, gold, and bronze with him. King David also dedicated these to the Lord, along with the silver and gold he had dedicated from all the nations he had subdued \u2014&nbsp; from Edom, Moab, the Ammonites, the Philistines, the Amalekites, and the spoil of Hadadezer son of Rehob, king of Zobah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>David\u2019s Officials<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>David made a reputation for himself when he returned from striking down eighteen thousand Edomites in Salt Valley. He placed garrisons throughout Edom, and all the Edomites were subject to David. The Lord made David victorious wherever he went.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So David reigned over all Israel, administering justice and righteousness for all his people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joab son of Zeruiah was over the army;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was court historian;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zadok son of Ahitub and Ahimelech son of Abiathar were priests;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seraiah was court secretary;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and David\u2019s sons were chief officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2 Samuel Chapter 9<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ziba Responds to David<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>David asked, \u201cIs there anyone remaining from the family of Saul I can show kindness to for Jonathan\u2019s sake?\u201d There was a servant of Saul\u2019s family named Ziba. They summoned him to David, and the king said to him, \u201cAre you Ziba?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am your servant,\u201d he replied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So the king asked, \u201cIs there anyone left of Saul\u2019s family that I can show the kindness of God to?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ziba said to the king, \u201cThere is still Jonathan\u2019s son who was injured in both feet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The king asked him, \u201cWhere is he?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ziba answered the king, \u201cYou\u2019ll find him in Lo-debar at the house of Machir son of Ammiel.\u201d So King David had him brought from the house of Machir son of Ammiel in Lo-debar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>David\u2019s Kindness to Mephibosheth<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Mephibosheth son of Jonathan son of Saul came to David, fell facedown, and paid homage. David said, \u201cMephibosheth!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am your servant,\u201d he replied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t be afraid,\u201d David said to him, \u201csince I intend to show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all your grandfather Saul\u2019s fields, and you will always eat meals at my table.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mephibosheth paid homage and said, \u201cWhat is your servant that you take an interest in a dead dog like me?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then the king summoned Saul\u2019s attendant Ziba and said to him, \u201cI have given to your master\u2019s grandson all that belonged to Saul and his family. You, your sons, and your servants are to work the ground for him, and you are to bring in the crops so your master\u2019s grandson will have food to eat. But Mephibosheth, your master\u2019s grandson, is always to eat at my table.\u201d Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ziba said to the king, \u201cYour servant will do all my lord the king commands.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So Mephibosheth ate at David\u2019s table just like one of the king\u2019s sons. Mephibosheth had a young son whose name was Mica. All those living in Ziba\u2019s house were Mephibosheth\u2019s servants. However, Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem because he always ate at the king\u2019s table. His feet had been injured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2 Samuel Chapter 10<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>David Sends Condolences<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Some time later, the king of the Ammonites died, and his son Hanun became king in his place. Then David said, \u201cI\u2019ll show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash, just as his father showed kindness to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So David sent his emissaries to console Hanun concerning his father. However, when they arrived in the land of the Ammonites, the Ammonite leaders said to Hanun their lord, \u201cJust because David has sent men with condolences for you, do you really believe he\u2019s showing respect for your father? Instead, hasn\u2019t David sent his emissaries in order to scout out the city, spy on it, and demolish it?\u201d So Hanun took David\u2019s emissaries, shaved off half their beards, cut their clothes in half at the hips, and sent them away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When this was reported to David, he sent someone to meet them, since they were deeply humiliated. The king said, \u201cStay in Jericho until your beards grow back; then return.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>War with the Ammonites<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>When the Ammonites realized they had become repulsive to David, they hired twenty thousand foot soldiers from the Arameans of Beth-rehob and Zobah, one thousand men from the king of Maacah, and twelve thousand men from Tob.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>David heard about it and sent Joab and all the elite troops. The Ammonites marched out and lined up in battle formation at the entrance to the city gate while the Arameans of Zobah and Rehob and the men of Tob and Maacah were in the field by themselves. When Joab saw that there was a battle line in front of him and another behind him, he chose some of Israel\u2019s finest young men and lined up in formation to engage the Arameans. He placed the rest of the forces under the command of his brother Abishai. They lined up in formation to engage the Ammonites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Joab\u2019s Plan of Attack<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf the Arameans are too strong for me,\u201d Joab said, \u201cthen you will be my help. However, if the Ammonites are too strong for you, I\u2019ll come to help you. Be strong! Let\u2019s prove ourselves strong for our people and for the cities of our God. May the Lord\u2019s will be done.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joab and his troops advanced to fight against the Arameans, and they fled before him. When the Ammonites saw that the Arameans had fled, they too fled before Abishai and entered the city. So Joab withdrew from the attack against the Ammonites and went to Jerusalem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the Arameans saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they regrouped. Hadadezer sent messengers to bring the Arameans who were beyond the Euphrates River, and they came to Helam with Shobach, commander of Hadadezer\u2019s army, leading them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When this was reported to David, he gathered all Israel, crossed the Jordan, and went to Helam. Then the Arameans lined up to engage David in battle and fought against him. But the Arameans fled before Israel, and David killed seven hundred of their charioteers and forty thousand foot soldiers. He also struck down Shobach commander of their army, who died there. When all the kings who were Hadadezer\u2019s subjects saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they made peace with Israel and became their subjects. After this, the Arameans were afraid to ever help the Ammonites again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2 Samuel Chapter 11<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>David\u2019s Adultery with Bathsheba<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In the spring when kings march out to war, David sent Joab with his officers and all Israel. They destroyed the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah, but David remained in Jerusalem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One evening David got up from his bed and strolled around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing \u2014 a very beautiful woman. So David sent someone to inquire about her, and he said, \u201cIsn\u2019t this Bathsheba, daughter of Eliam and wife of Uriah the Hethite?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>David sent messengers to get her, and when she came to him, he slept with her. Now she had just been purifying herself from her uncleanness. Afterward, she returned home. The woman conceived and sent word to inform David, \u201cI am pregnant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>David sent orders to Joab: \u201cSend me Uriah the Hethite.\u201d So Joab sent Uriah to David. When Uriah came to him, David asked how Joab and the troops were doing and how the war was going. Then he said to Uriah, \u201cGo down to your house and wash your feet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So Uriah left the palace, and a gift from the king followed him. But Uriah slept at the door of the palace with all his master\u2019s servants; he did not go down to his house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it was reported to David, \u201cUriah didn\u2019t go home,\u201d David questioned Uriah, \u201cHaven\u2019t you just come from a journey? Why didn\u2019t you go home?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Uriah\u2019s Integrity<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Uriah answered David, \u201cThe ark, Israel, and Judah are dwelling in tents, and my master Joab and his soldiers are camping in the open field. How can I enter my house to eat and drink and sleep with my wife? As surely as you live and by your life, I will not do this!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStay here today also,\u201d David said to Uriah, \u201cand tomorrow I will send you back.\u201d So Uriah stayed in Jerusalem that day and the next. Then David invited Uriah to eat and drink with him, and David got him drunk. He went out in the evening to lie down on his cot with his master\u2019s servants, but he did not go home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Uriah\u2019s Death Arranged<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The next morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it with Uriah. In the letter he wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Put Uriah at the front of the fiercest fighting, then withdraw from him so that he is struck down and dies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Joab was besieging the city, he put Uriah in the place where he knew the best enemy soldiers were. Then the men of the city came out and attacked Joab, and some of the men from David\u2019s soldiers fell in battle; Uriah the Hethite also died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joab sent someone to report to David all the details of the battle. He commanded the messenger, \u201cWhen you\u2019ve finished telling the king all the details of the battle \u2014&nbsp; if the king\u2019s anger gets stirred up and he asks you, \u2018Why did you get so close to the city to fight? Didn\u2019t you realize they would shoot from the top of the wall? At Thebez, who struck Abimelech son of Jerubbesheth? Didn\u2019t a woman drop an upper millstone on him from the top of the wall so that he died? Why did you get so close to the wall? \u2019 \u2014 then say, \u2018Your servant Uriah the Hethite is dead also.\u2019\u201d Then the messenger left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Report to David<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>When he arrived, he reported to David all that Joab had sent him to tell. The messenger reported to David, \u201cThe men gained the advantage over us and came out against us in the field, but we counterattacked right up to the entrance of the city gate. However, the archers shot down on your servants from the top of the wall, and some of the king\u2019s servants died. Your servant Uriah the Hethite is also dead.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>David told the messenger, \u201cSay this to Joab: \u2018Don\u2019t let this matter upset you because the sword devours all alike. Intensify your fight against the city and demolish it.\u2019 Encourage him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Uriah\u2019s wife heard that her husband, Uriah, had died, she mourned for him. When the time of mourning ended, David had her brought to his house. She became his wife and bore him a son. However, the Lord considered what David had done to be evil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2 Samuel Chapter 12<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Nathan\u2019s Parable<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>So the Lord sent Nathan to David. When he arrived, he said to him:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There were two men in a certain city, one rich and the other poor. The rich man had very large flocks and herds, but the poor man had nothing except one small ewe lamb that he had bought. He raised her, and she grew up with him and with his children. From his meager food she would eat, from his cup she would drink, and in his arms she would sleep. She was like a daughter to him. Now a traveler came to the rich man, but the rich man could not bring himself to take one of his own sheep or cattle to prepare for the traveler who had come to him. Instead, he took the poor man\u2019s lamb and prepared it for his guest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>David was infuriated with the man and said to Nathan, \u201cAs the Lord lives, the man who did this deserves to die! Because he has done this thing and shown no pity, he must pay four lambs for that lamb.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>David\u2019s Repentance<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Nathan replied to David, \u201cYou are the man! This is what the Lord God of Israel says: \u2018I anointed you king over Israel, and I rescued you from Saul. I gave your master\u2019s house to you and your master\u2019s wives into your arms, and I gave you the house of Israel and Judah, and if that was not enough, I would have given you even more. Why then have you despised the Lord\u2019s command by doing what I consider evil? You struck down Uriah the Hethite with the sword and took his wife as your own wife \u2014 you murdered him with the Ammonite\u2019s sword. Now therefore, the sword will never leave your house because you despised me and took the wife of Uriah the Hethite to be your own wife.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is what the Lord says, \u2018I am going to bring disaster on you from your own family: I will take your wives and give them to another before your very eyes, and he will sleep with them in broad daylight. You acted in secret, but I will do this before all Israel and in broad daylight.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>David responded to Nathan, \u201cI have sinned against the Lord.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then Nathan replied to David, \u201cAnd the Lord has taken away your sin; you will not die. However, because you treated the Lord with such contempt in this matter, the son born to you will die.\u201d Then Nathan went home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Death of Bathsheba\u2019s Son<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lord struck the baby that Uriah\u2019s wife had borne to David, and he became deathly ill. David pleaded with God for the boy. He fasted, went home, and spent the night lying on the ground. The elders of his house stood beside him to get him up from the ground, but he was unwilling and would not eat anything with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the seventh day the baby died. But David\u2019s servants were afraid to tell him the baby was dead. They said, \u201cLook, while the baby was alive, we spoke to him, and he wouldn\u2019t listen to us. So how can we tell him the baby is dead? He may do something desperate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When David saw that his servants were whispering to each other, he guessed that the baby was dead. So he asked his servants, \u201cIs the baby dead?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe is dead,\u201d they replied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then David got up from the ground. He washed, anointed himself, changed his clothes, went to the Lord\u2019s house, and worshiped. Then he went home and requested something to eat. So they served him food, and he ate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His servants asked him, \u201cWhy have you done this? While the baby was alive, you fasted and wept, but when he died, you got up and ate food.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He answered, \u201cWhile the baby was alive, I fasted and wept because I thought, \u2018Who knows? The Lord may be gracious to me and let him live.\u2019 But now that he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I\u2019ll go to him, but he will never return to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Birth of Solomon&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Then David comforted his wife Bathsheba; he went to her and slept with her. She gave birth to a son and named him Solomon. The Lord loved him, and he sent a message through the prophet Nathan, who named him Jedidiah, because of the Lord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Capture of the City of Rabbah<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Joab fought against Rabbah of the Ammonites and captured the royal fortress. Then Joab sent messengers to David to say, \u201cI have fought against Rabbah and have also captured its water supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNow therefore, assemble the rest of the troops, lay siege to the city, and capture it. Otherwise I will be the one to capture the city, and it will be named after me.\u201d So David assembled all the troops and went to Rabbah; he fought against it and captured it. He took the crown from the head of their king, and it was placed on David\u2019s head. The crown weighed seventy-five pounds of gold, and it had a precious stone in it. In addition, David took away a large quantity of plunder from the city. He removed the people who were in the city and put them to work with saws, iron picks, and iron axes, and to labor at brickmaking. He did the same to all the Ammonite cities. Then he and all his troops returned to Jerusalem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Close<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In my opinion, there are three headlines here.&nbsp; First, I am almost taken aback at David\u2019s integrity for the oath he made to Jonathan.
