A psalm.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Listen, Shepherd of Israel,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>who leads Joseph like a flock;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>you who sit enthroned between the cherubim,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>shine on Ephraim,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Benjamin, and Manasseh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rally your power and come to save us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Restore us, God;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>make your face shine on us,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>so that we may be saved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lord God of Armies,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>how long will you be angry<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>with your people\u2019s prayers?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You fed them the bread of tears<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and gave them a full measure<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>of tears to drink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You put us at odds with our neighbors;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>our enemies mock us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Restore us, God of Armies;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>make your face shine on us, so that we may be saved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You dug up a vine from Egypt;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>you drove out the nations and planted it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You cleared a place for it;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>it took root and filled the land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Return, God of Armies<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The mountains were covered by its shade,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and the mighty cedars with its branches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It sent out sprouts toward the Sea<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and shoots toward the River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why have you broken down its walls<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>so that all who pass by pick its fruit?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Boars from the forest tear at it<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and creatures of the field feed on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Return, God of Armies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Look down from heaven and see;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>take care of this vine,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the root your right hand planted,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the son that you made strong for yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was cut down and burned;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>they perish at the rebuke of your countenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let your hand be with the man at your right hand,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>with the son of man<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>you have made strong for yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then we will not turn away from you;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>revive us, and we will call on your name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Restore us, Lord, God of Armies;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>make your face shine on us, so that we may be saved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Psalm 81<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Call to Obedience<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>For the choir director: on the&nbsp;<\/em><em><strong>Gittith<\/strong><\/em><em>. Of Asaph.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sing for joy to God our strength;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>shout in triumph to the God of Jacob.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lift up a song \u2014 play the tambourine,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the melodious lyre, and the harp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Blow the ram\u2019s horn on the day of our feasts<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>during the new moon<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and during the full moon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For this is a statute for Israel,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>an ordinance of the God of Jacob.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He set it up as a decree for Joseph<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>when he went throughout the land of Egypt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I heard an unfamiliar language:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI relieved his shoulder from the burden;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>his hands were freed from carrying the basket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You called out in distress, and I rescued you;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I answered you from the thundercloud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I tested you at the Waters of Meribah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><em>Selah<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Listen, my people, and I will admonish you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Israel, if you would only listen to me!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There must not be a strange god among you;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>you must not bow down to a foreign god.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am the Lord your God,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>who brought you up from the land of Egypt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut my people did not listen to my voice;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Israel did not obey me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>to follow their own plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If only my people would listen to me<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and Israel would follow my ways,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I would quickly subdue their enemies<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and turn my hand against their foes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those who hate the Lord<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>would cower to him;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>their doom would last forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But he would feed Israel with the best wheat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI would satisfy you with honey from the rock.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Psalm 82<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Plea for Righteous Judgment<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>A psalm of Asaph.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>God stands in the divine assembly;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>he pronounces judgment among the gods:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHow long will you judge unjustly<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and show partiality to the wicked?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><em>Selah<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Provide justice for the needy and the fatherless;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>uphold the rights of the oppressed and the destitute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rescue the poor and needy;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>save them from the power of the wicked.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They do not know or understand;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>they wander in darkness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All the foundations of the earth are shaken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I said, \u201cYou are gods;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>you are all sons of the Most High.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, you will die like humans<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and fall like any other ruler.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rise up, God, judge the earth,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>for all the nations belong to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Psalm 83<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Prayer against Enemies<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>A song. A psalm of Asaph.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>God, do not keep silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do not be deaf, God; do not be quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>See how your enemies make an uproar;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>those who hate you have acted arrogantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They devise clever schemes against your people;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>they conspire against your treasured ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They say, \u201cCome, let\u2019s wipe them out as a nation<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>so that Israel\u2019s name will no longer be remembered.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For they have conspired with one mind;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>they form an alliance against you \u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moab and the Hagrites,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even Assyria has joined them;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>they lend support to the sons of Lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><em>Selah<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deal with them as you did with Midian,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>as you did with Sisera<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and Jabin at the Kishon River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They were destroyed at En-dor;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>they became manure for the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and all their tribal leaders like Zebah and Zalmunna,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>who said, \u201cLet\u2019s seize God\u2019s pastures for ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make them like tumbleweed, my God,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>like straw before the wind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As fire burns a forest,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>as a flame blazes through mountains,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>so pursue them with your tempest<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and terrify them with your storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cover their faces with shame<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>so that they will seek your name, Lord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let them be put to shame and terrified forever;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>let them perish in disgrace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>May they know that you alone \u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>whose name is the Lord \u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>are the Most High over the whole earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Psalm 84<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Longing for God\u2019s House<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>For the choir director: on the&nbsp;<\/em><em><strong>Gittith<\/strong><\/em><em>. A psalm of the sons of Korah.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><em>Selah<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Happy are the people whose strength is in you,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>whose hearts are set on pilgrimage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As they pass through the Valley of Baca,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>they make it a source of spring water;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>even the autumn rain will cover it with blessings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They go from strength to strength;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>each appears before God in Zion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lord God of Armies, hear my prayer;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>listen, God of Jacob.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><em>Selah<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider our shield, God;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>look on the face of your anointed one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Better a day in your courts<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>than a thousand anywhere else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I would rather stand at the threshold of the house of my God<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>than live in the tents of wicked people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the Lord God is a sun and shield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lord grants favor and honor;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>he does not withhold the good<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>from those who live with integrity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Happy is the person who trusts in you,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lord of Armies!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Psalm 85<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Restoration of Favor<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>For the choir director. A psalm of the sons of Korah.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lord, you showed favor to your land;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>you restored the fortunes of Jacob.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You forgave your people\u2019s guilt;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>you covered all their sin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><em>Selah<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You withdrew all your fury;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>you turned from your burning anger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Return to us, God of our salvation,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and abandon your displeasure with us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Will you be angry with us forever?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Will you prolong your anger for all generations?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Will you not revive us again<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>so that your people may rejoice in you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Show us your faithful love, Lord,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and give us your salvation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I will listen to what God will say;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>surely the Lord will declare peace<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>to his people, his faithful ones,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and not let them go back to foolish ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His salvation is very near those who fear him,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>so that glory may dwell in our land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Faithful love and truth will join together;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>righteousness and peace will embrace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Truth will spring up from the earth,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and righteousness will look down from heaven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, the Lord will provide what is good,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and our land will yield its crops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Righteousness will go before him<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>to prepare the way for his steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Close<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You may be thinking that the 6th and 7th verses of Psalm 82 sound really familiar.&nbsp; On the heels of that thought, you find yourself asking , \u201cDidn\u2019t Jesus say those words?\u201d&nbsp; And you would be correct.&nbsp; He did indeed quote this scripture when responding to the accusation of blasphemy in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.bible.com\/bible\/1713\/JHN.10.CSB\">John 10:34-36<\/a>.&nbsp; I also probably don\u2019t have to point out to you that these are some of the most confusing verses in all of Scripture.&nbsp; I am not going to go there today\u2026I\u2019ll leave John 10 to people who are much smarter than I am.&nbsp; But this does remind me of something I read recently in regard to studying Scripture.&nbsp; The article said that when wrestling with a particularly difficult passage, it is sometimes useful to establish what its&nbsp;<em><strong>not<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;saying while on your way to discovering what it does. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think we can apply that wisdom here to Psalm 82.&nbsp; Here\u2019s what we know from a plethora of scripture:&nbsp; There is only one God.&nbsp; Only One.&nbsp; And none of us are it.&nbsp; I left off one verse from the Shema yesterday\u2026that central Jewish prayer of so much importance.&nbsp; That was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.bible.com\/bible\/1713\/DEU.6.CSB\">Deuteronomy 6:4<\/a>&nbsp;and it says:&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Listen, Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em>Now whether the writer \u2013 and Jesus, for that matter &#8211; is being sarcastic or there is a nuance in ancient Hebrew that we just don\u2019t get, I don\u2019t know.&nbsp; But we can say with confidence that we know what it&nbsp;<em><strong>doesn\u2019t<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;mean. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, don\u2019t forget.&nbsp; If you chase this rabbit whether by commentaries or your pastor, let me know what you find out at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/liftinghervoice.com\/contact\/\">Lifting Her Voice<\/a>.com,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Lifting-Her-Voice-106516874715441\">Facebook<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/joy_blantonmiller\/\">Instagram<\/a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LiftingHerVoice\">Twitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>See You Tomorrow!<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Thank you for joining me here today.&nbsp; I pray that by spending time in His Word every day, you will by changed.&nbsp; Visit me at Lifting Her Voice.com with your comments and questions.&nbsp; And don\u2019t forget to visit the Blog page while you\u2019re there.&nbsp; If you like the podcast, it would be great if you\u2019d give it a five-star review and share it with everyone you know.&nbsp; Don&#8217;t forget to subscribe wherever you get your podcasts.&nbsp; See you tomorrow!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unless otherwise noted, all Scripture quotations are taken from the Christian Standard Bible(r), Copyright (c) 2017 by Holman Bible Publishers.
