To symbolize this, God sends a plague of locusts to Judge Israel, but his judgment on the surrounding nations is coming, too. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joel is quoted in Acts 2:17 when Peter gives his sermon on the Day of Pentecost.&nbsp; We\u2019ll only spend this one day in Joel and it packs a punch!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Joel Chapter 1<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The word of the Lord that came to Joel son of Pethuel:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Plague of Locusts<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Hear this, you elders;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>listen, all you inhabitants of the land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Has anything like this ever happened in your days<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>or in the days of your ancestors?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tell your children about it,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and let your children tell their children,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and their children the next generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What the devouring locust has left,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the swarming locust has eaten;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>what the swarming locust has left,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the young locust has eaten;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and what the young locust has left,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the destroying locust has eaten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wake up, you drunkards, and weep;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>wail, all you wine drinkers,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>because of the sweet wine,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>for it has been taken from your mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a nation has invaded my land,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>powerful and without number;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>its teeth are the teeth of a lion,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and it has the fangs of a lioness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has devastated my grapevine<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and splintered my fig tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has stripped off its bark and thrown it away;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>its branches have turned white.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grieve like a young woman dressed in sackcloth,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>mourning for the husband of her youth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grain and drink offerings have been cut off<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>from the house of the Lord;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the priests, who are ministers of the Lord, mourn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fields are destroyed;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the land grieves;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>indeed, the grain is destroyed;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the new wine is dried up;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and the fresh oil fails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Dress in Sackcloth and Lament<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Be ashamed, you farmers,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>wail, you vinedressers,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>over the wheat and the barley,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>because the harvest of the field has perished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The grapevine is dried up,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and the fig tree is withered;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the pomegranate, the date palm, and the apple \u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>all the trees of the orchard \u2014 have withered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, human joy has dried up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dress in sackcloth and lament, you priests;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>wail, you ministers of the altar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Come and spend the night in sackcloth,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>you ministers of my God,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>because grain and drink offerings<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>are withheld from the house of your God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Announce a sacred fast;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>proclaim a solemn assembly!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gather the elders<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and all the residents of the land<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>at the house of the Lord your God,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and cry out to the Lord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Day of the Lord<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Woe because of that day!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the day of the Lord is near<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and will come as devastation from the Almighty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hasn\u2019t the food been cut off<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>before our eyes,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>joy and gladness<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>from the house of our God?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The seeds lie shriveled in their casings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The storehouses are in ruin,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and the granaries are broken down,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>because the grain has withered away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How the animals groan!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The herds of cattle wander in confusion<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>since they have no pasture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even the flocks of sheep and goats suffer punishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I call to you, Lord,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>for fire has consumed<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the pastures of the wilderness,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and flames have devoured<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>all the trees of the orchard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even the wild animals cry out to you,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>for the river beds are dried up,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and fire has consumed<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the pastures of the wilderness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Joel Chapter 2<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Blow the ram\u2019s horn in Zion;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>sound the alarm on my holy mountain!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let all the residents of the land tremble,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>for the day of the Lord is coming;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>in fact, it is near \u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>a day of darkness and gloom,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>a day of clouds and total darkness,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>like the dawn spreading over the mountains;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>a great and strong people appears,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>such as never existed in ages past<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and never will again<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>in all the generations to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A fire devours in front of them,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and behind them a flame blazes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The land in front of them<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>is like the garden of Eden,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>but behind them,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>it is like a desert wasteland;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>there is no escape from them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their appearance is like that of horses,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and they gallop like war horses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They bound on the tops of the mountains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their sound is like the sound of chariots,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>like the sound of fiery flames consuming stubble,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>like a mighty army deployed for war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nations writhe in horror before them;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>all faces turn pale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They attack as warriors attack;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>they scale walls as men of war do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each goes on his own path,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and they do not change their course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They do not push each other;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>each proceeds on his own path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They dodge the arrows, never stopping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They storm the city;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>they run on the wall;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>they climb into the houses;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>they enter through the windows like thieves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The earth quakes before them;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the sky shakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sun and moon grow dark,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and the stars cease their shining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lord makes his voice heard<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>in the presence of his army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His camp is very large;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>those who carry out his command are powerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, the day of the Lord is terrible and dreadful \u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>who can endure it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>God\u2019s Call for Repentance<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Even now \u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>this is the Lord\u2019s declaration \u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>turn to me with all your heart,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>with fasting, weeping, and mourning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tear your hearts,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>not just your clothes,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and return to the Lord your God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For he is gracious and compassionate,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>slow to anger, abounding in faithful love,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and he relents from sending disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Who knows? He may turn and relent<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and leave a blessing behind him,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>so you can offer a grain offering and a drink offering<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>to the Lord your God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Blow the ram\u2019s horn in Zion!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Announce a sacred fast;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>proclaim a solemn assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gather the people;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>sanctify the congregation;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>assemble the aged;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>gather the infants,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>even babies nursing at the breast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let the groom leave his bedroom,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and the bride her honeymoon chamber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let the priests, the Lord\u2019s ministers,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>weep between the portico and the altar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let them say,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHave pity on your people, Lord,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and do not make your inheritance a disgrace,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>an object of scorn among the nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why should it be said among the peoples,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Where is their God?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>God\u2019s Response to His People<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Then the Lord became jealous for his land and spared his people. The Lord answered his people:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Look, I am about to send you<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>grain, new wine, and fresh oil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will be satiated with them,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and I will no longer make you<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>a disgrace among the nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I will drive the northerner far from you<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and banish him to a dry and desolate land,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>his front ranks into the Dead Sea,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and his rear guard into the Mediterranean Sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His stench will rise;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>yes, his rotten smell will rise,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>for he has done astonishing things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t be afraid, land;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>rejoice and be glad,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>for the Lord has done astonishing things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t be afraid, wild animals,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>for the wilderness pastures have turned green,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the trees bear their fruit,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and the fig tree and grapevine yield their riches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Children of Zion, rejoice and be glad<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>in the Lord your God,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>because he gives you the autumn rain<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>for your vindication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He sends showers for you,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>both autumn and spring rain as before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The threshing floors will be full of grain,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and the vats will overflow<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>with new wine and fresh oil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I will repay you for the years<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>that the swarming locust ate,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the young locust, the destroying locust,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and the devouring locust \u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>my great army that I sent against you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will have plenty to eat and be satisfied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will praise the name of the Lord your God,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>who has dealt wondrously with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My people will never again be put to shame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will know that I am present in Israel<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and that I am the Lord your God,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and there is no other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My people will never again be put to shame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>God\u2019s Promise of His Spirit<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>After this<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I will pour out my Spirit on all humanity;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>then your sons and your daughters will prophesy,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>your old men will have dreams,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and your young men will see visions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I will even pour out my Spirit<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>on the male and female slaves in those days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I will display wonders<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>in the heavens and on the earth:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>blood, fire, and columns of smoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sun will be turned to darkness<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and the moon to blood<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then everyone who calls<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>on the name of the Lord will be saved,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>for there will be an escape<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>for those on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>as the Lord promised,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>among the survivors the Lord calls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Joel Chapter 3<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Judgment of the Nations<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, in those days and at that time,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>when I restore the fortunes of Judah and Jerusalem,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I will gather all the nations<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and take them to the Valley of Jehoshaphat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I will enter into judgment with them there<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>because of my people, my inheritance Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The nations have scattered the Israelites<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>in foreign countries<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and divided up my land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They cast lots for my people;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>they bartered a boy for a prostitute<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and sold a girl for wine to drink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And also: Tyre, Sidon, and all the territories of Philistia \u2014 what are you to me? Are you paying me back or trying to get even with me? I will quickly bring retribution on your heads. For you took my silver and gold and carried my finest treasures to your temples. You sold the people of Judah and Jerusalem to the Greeks to remove them far from their own territory. Look, I am about to rouse them up from the place where you sold them; I will bring retribution on your heads. I will sell your sons and daughters to the people of Judah, and they will sell them to the Sabeans, to a distant nation, for the Lord has spoken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Swing the Sickle<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Proclaim this among the nations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prepare for holy war;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>rouse the warriors;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>let all the men of war advance and attack!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beat your plows into swords<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and your pruning knives into spears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let even the weakling say, \u201cI am a warrior.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Come quickly, all you surrounding nations;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>gather yourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bring down your warriors there, Lord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let the nations be roused<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and come to the Valley of Jehoshaphat,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>for there I will sit down<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>to judge all the surrounding nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Swing the sickle<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>because the harvest is ripe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Come and trample the grapes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>because the winepress is full;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the wine vats overflow<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>because the wickedness of the nations is extreme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Multitudes, multitudes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>in the valley of decision!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the day of the Lord is near<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>in the valley of decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sun and moon will grow dark,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and the stars will cease their shining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lord will roar from Zion<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and make his voice heard from Jerusalem;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>heaven and earth will shake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the Lord will be a refuge for his people,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>a stronghold for the Israelites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Israel Blessed<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Then you will know<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>that I am the Lord your God,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>who dwells in Zion, my holy mountain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jerusalem will be holy,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and foreigners will never overrun it again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In that day<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the mountains will drip with sweet wine,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and the hills will flow with milk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All the streams of Judah will flow with water,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and a spring will issue from the Lord\u2019s house,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>watering the Valley of Acacias.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Egypt will become desolate,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and Edom a desert wasteland,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>because of the violence done to the people of Judah<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>in whose land they shed innocent blood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Judah will be inhabited forever,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and Jerusalem from generation to generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I will pardon their bloodguilt,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>which I have not pardoned,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>for the Lord dwells in Zion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Close<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One must ask oneself, is Joel \u2013 or God thru Joel \u2013 talking about Israel\u2019s current sin or is he talking about a time that is in even our future?&nbsp; Perhaps both.&nbsp; This sounds like so much more than just a warning to Israel.&nbsp; What can we take from these first two chapters of Joel?
