The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>God\u2019s Vengeance<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lord is a jealous and avenging God;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the Lord takes vengeance<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and is fierce in wrath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lord takes vengeance against his foes;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>he is furious with his enemies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lord is slow to anger but great in power;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the Lord will never leave the guilty unpunished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His path is in the whirlwind and storm,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and clouds are the dust beneath his feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He rebukes the sea and dries it up,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and he makes all the rivers run dry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bashan and Carmel wither;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>even the flower of Lebanon withers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mountains quake before him,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and the hills melt;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the earth trembles at his presence \u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the world and all who live in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Who can withstand his indignation?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Who can endure his burning anger?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His wrath is poured out like fire;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>even rocks are shattered before him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Destruction of Nineveh<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lord is good,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>a stronghold in a day of distress;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>he cares for those who take refuge in him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But he will completely destroy Nineveh<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>with an overwhelming flood,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and he will chase his enemies into darkness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whatever you plot against the Lord,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>he will bring it to complete destruction;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>oppression will not rise up a second time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For they will be consumed<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>like entangled thorns,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>like the drink of a drunkard<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and like straw that is fully dry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One has gone out from you,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>who plots evil against the Lord,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and is a wicked counselor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Promise of Judah\u2019s Deliverance<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is what the Lord says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though they are strong and numerous,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>they will still be mowed down,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and he will pass away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though I have punished you,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I will punish you no longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For I will now break off his yoke from you<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and tear off your shackles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Assyrian King\u2019s Demise<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lord has issued an order concerning you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There will be no offspring<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>to carry on your name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I will eliminate the carved idol and cast image<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>from the house of your gods;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I will prepare your grave,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>for you are contemptible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Look to the mountains \u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the feet of the herald,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>who proclaims peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Celebrate your festivals, Judah;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>fulfill your vows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the wicked one will never again<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>march through you;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>he will be entirely wiped out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nahum Chapter 2<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Attack against Nineveh<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One who scatters is coming up against you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Man the fortifications!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Watch the road!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brace yourself!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Summon all your strength!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the Lord will restore the majesty of Jacob,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>yes, the majesty of Israel,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>though ravagers have ravaged them<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and ruined their vine branches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The shields of his warriors are dyed red;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the valiant men are dressed in scarlet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fittings of the chariot flash like fire<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>on the day of its battle preparations,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and the spears are brandished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The chariots dash madly through the streets;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>they rush around in the plazas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They look like torches;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>they dart back and forth like lightning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He gives orders to his officers;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>they stumble as they advance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They race to its wall;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the protective shield is set in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The river gates are opened,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and the palace erodes away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beauty is stripped;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>she is carried away;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>her ladies-in-waiting moan<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>like the sound of doves<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and beat their breasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nineveh has been like a pool of water<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>from her first days,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>but they are fleeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStop! Stop!\u201d they cry,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>but no one turns back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPlunder the silver! Plunder the gold!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no end to the treasure,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>an abundance of every precious thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Desolation, decimation, devastation!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hearts melt,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>knees tremble,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>insides churn,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>every face grows pale!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Lord is Against Nineveh<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Where is the lions\u2019 lair,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>or the feeding ground of the young lions,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>where the lion and lioness prowled,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and the lion\u2019s cub,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>with nothing to frighten them away?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lion mauled whatever its cubs needed<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and strangled prey for its lionesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It filled up its dens with the kill,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and its lairs with mauled prey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beware, I am against you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the declaration of the Lord of Armies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I will make your chariots go up in smoke,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and the sword will devour your young lions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I will cut off your prey from the earth,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and the sound of your messengers<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>will never be heard again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nahum Chapter 3<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Nineveh\u2019s Downfall<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Woe to the city of blood,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>totally deceitful,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>full of plunder,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>never without prey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The crack of the whip<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and rumble of the wheel,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>galloping horse<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and jolting chariot!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Charging horseman,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>flashing sword,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>shining spear;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>heaps of slain,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>mounds of corpses,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>dead bodies without end \u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>they stumble over their dead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of the continual prostitution of the prostitute,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the attractive mistress of sorcery,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>who treats nations and clans like merchandise<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>by her prostitution and sorcery,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am against you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the declaration of the Lord of Armies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I will lift your skirts over your face<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and display your nakedness to nations,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>your shame to kingdoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I will throw filth on you<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and treat you with contempt;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I will make a spectacle of you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then all who see you will recoil from you, saying,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNineveh is devastated;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>who will show sympathy to her?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where can I find anyone to comfort you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Are you better than Thebes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>that sat along the Nile<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>with water surrounding her,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>whose rampart was the sea,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the river her wall?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cush and Egypt were her endless source of strength;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Put and Libya were among her allies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet she became an exile;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>she went into captivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her children were also dashed to pieces<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>at the head of every street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They cast lots for her dignitaries,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and all her nobles were bound in chains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You also will become drunk;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>you will hide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You also will seek refuge from the enemy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All your fortresses are fig trees<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>with figs that ripened first;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>when shaken, they fall \u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>right into the mouth of the eater!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>There Is No Remedy<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Look, your troops are like women among you;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>your land\u2019s city gates<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>are wide open to your enemies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fire will devour the bars of your gates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Draw water for the siege;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>strengthen your fortresses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Step into the clay and tread the mortar;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>take hold of the brick-mold!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fire will devour you there;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the sword will cut you down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will devour you like the young locust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Multiply yourselves like the young locust;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>multiply like the swarming locust!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You have made your merchants<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>more numerous than the stars of the sky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The young locust strips the land<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and flies away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your court officials are like the swarming locust,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and your scribes like clouds of locusts,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>which settle on the walls on a cold day;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>when the sun rises, they take off,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and no one knows where they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>King of Assyria, your shepherds slumber;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>your officers sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your people are scattered across the mountains<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>with no one to gather them together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no remedy for your injury;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>your wound is severe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All who hear the news about you<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>will clap their hands because of you,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>for who has not experienced<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>your constant cruelty?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Close<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s kind of a little twist in the structure here.&nbsp; You would expect Nahum to break out of the gate with all the gory detail of Nineveh\u2019s fall.&nbsp; He does this but not until chapters 2 &amp; 3.&nbsp; Nineveh and Assyria are not even mentioned in chapter 1.&nbsp; But he uses Isaiah\u2019s language when speaking of Babylon and with similarities to parts of Micah and Habakkuk.&nbsp; This incomplete acrostic describes a God who fosters a healthy fear.&nbsp; Did you think that too? &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Tim Mackie, the destruction of Assyria is being used as an example of how God will not allow evil empires to endure forever.&nbsp; This book is not uplifting but it does highlight that human history is filled with awful, violent behavior and that it grieves God.&nbsp; God does
