My precious husband and loving editor pointed out a faux pas from my Welcome for Episode 113 of the podcast. I had read an excerpt from the Apocrypha that I thought (wrongly, evidently) was Old English.
Here’s what Mitch’s email said:
“The Apocrypha version you are reading is not Old English but Early Modern English. Old English is virtually unintelligible to English speakers of today. Middle English has some words in common.”
He also thoughtfully included an example of Old English taken from the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles written in the 9th Century. He was right…it was unintelligible. The example of Middle English from the Canterbury Tales wasn’t much better.
So, pardon my faux pas. I stand corrected. Mea Culpa. Thank you, Mitchell…what would I do without you?
