Do you notice the foreshadowing in what Jesus said to Peter when you read Luke 22? Verse 32 reads, “But I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And you, when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”
And when you have turned back. Not only did Jesus predict that Peter would deny Him, but He knew He would use Peter mightily to encourage His new Church. But Jesus also knew He was going to appear personally to Peter after His resurrection. He knew that Peter would need extra encouragement after failing Jesus so miserably. Remember the words of Mark? Jesus said, “Tell the disciples and Peter to meet me…”
I think He knew that Peter would assume he was no longer qualified to be a disciple unless Jesus identified him specifically. And, despite all his failings, Jesus built His Church on this Rock. The name Peter means ‘rock,’ that’s why Jesus changed Simon’s name to Peter.
I know we’ve touched on a few of these points before, but it’s so important to highlight. Peter was just a human. Just like you and me. And Jesus can use us too, despite our failings.
